DNR searching for bear killer: two cubs orphaned

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Someone shot and killed a mother bear leaving two orphaned cubs and the DNR wants your help in finding the person who did it.

The bear's body was found Memorial Day Weekend near a cabin along Lake Lac Court Orielles. That's about nine miles south of Hayward in Sawyer County. Wardens say the mother bear had been shot once in the stomach and apparently lasted several days before it died. That means the shooting could have happened between mid-May and May 25th.

The two cubs were in a nearby tree. They were trapped and are being cared for by a wildlife rehabilitater. They hope to eventually release the cubs.

Anyone with information should call the DNR's toll-free tipline at 1-800-847-9367.
