Eau Claire (WQOW) - What would it take to implement a year-round elementary school in Eau Claire and who would be interested? Those are questions one group is looking into this summer.
A few principals are researching the idea for the Eau Claire Area School District. Tim Leibham, the assistant superintendent, says the vacant Little Red Elementary would be a possible home for a year-long learning program. The focus would be on elementary because the building was originally made for that age group. State and district requirements would still need to be met, but there would be more room for alternative learning. "What motivated this is, we have a building, and I believe we are a big enough district to allow some experimentation within the school system, to see if other means of instruction, other types of curricular offerings, could... for certain groups of students, increase academic achievement," said Leibham.
The district will start meeting with a few principals, who are volunteering their time, to begin a brainstorming process this summer. Leibham hopes to have some information to present to the school board this fall.
