MADISON (WKOW) -- People living in Madison may be happy to hear the city has one of the best bus systems in the country.
Metro Transit was named one of the "best of the best" by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). It's one of three bus systems in the country to earn the honor. Metro was recognized in the division that provides more than 4 million but less than 20 million passenger trips annually.
Metro was recognized for many achievements including its record ridership in 2011, its new fleet of hybrid buses and the improvement it made to allow riders to plan their trips online.
"We are very excited to receive this award. We feel Metro Transit is a high quality transit system, and we appreciate the significant role the entire community plays in ensuring its success," said Metro Transit General Manager Chuck Kamp. "We could not have experienced this record breaking ridership or provided such a high level of service without the hard work of our employees and continued support from our passengers, elected officials, and taxpayers. We are fortunate that our community has a culture that stands behind transit."
In October, Metro will be presented with APTA's 2012 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award at its annual membership meeting held this year in Seattle, Washington.
