Eau Claire (WQOW) -- When Eau Claire Memorial begins defense of its WIAA Boys Hockey sectional title next November, the Old Abes won't have one of their best players in uniform.

Defenseman Michael Kapla is leaving the program to skate with the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League. Kapla was a Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association first-team all-state performer in his sophomore and junior seasons.  Kapla says his goal is to play Division I college hockey, and skating in the USHL will help him achieve that goal.

"If I can just develop faster and get to college faster," says Kapla, "the league is a great league, many kids are able to make the jump to Division I hockey after they play either one or two years in the USHL, so I guess, yeah, being able to get there as soon as I could will kind of help me in the long run."

Kapla says he's already heard from a couple of Division I college hockey programs.
