CHILE (WKOW) -- A Beloit College professor died Tuesday while on a research trip with students in Chile.
Dan Shea, 71, was with a group of five students and two colleagues in Iquique, a city in northern Chile, when he suffered a fall during dinner and died Tuesday night.
A spokesman from the college said Shea started as an anthropology professor at the school in 1968 and had led students on the trips to Chile for more than 20 years.
In a letter to students and faculty, Beloit College President Scott Bierman said, "I admit to finding some comfort in the knowledge that when he passed, Dan was in a place that he loves, doing what he does best — introducing students to the archaeological wonders of Latin America."
The five students were scheduled to remain in Chile until June 27, but preparations are being made to return them home as soon as possible.
