Eau Claire (WQOW) - We're learning more about what an Eau Claire park could look like once it's restored.
The DNR recently gave Xcel Energy the go-ahead to remove about 25,000 tons of contaminated soil from Owen Park. Petroleum and heavy metals like arsenic and lead seeped into the soil more than 100 years ago when a manufacturing plant called the park home. Contractors will start doing the work in October. The playground will be closed from then until June.
The restoration plans include public input this summer. Some of the issues that could be addressed as Owen Park is restored: lack of handicapped parking, lack of parking near the playground and access to the river for tubers and boaters.
