Boaters cautioned: No safety barrier above St. Croix Falls Dam

Posted:

From Xcel Energy -- Boaters and recreationists using the stretch of the St. Croix River just upstream from the St. Croix Falls hydroelectric facility are urged to use extreme caution because the boat restraining barrier has been washed away due to high river flows and debris.

In addition, the plywood sheets, called flash boards, attached to pipes at the top of the St. Croix Falls dam spillway have washed away, as designed, due to high river flows. The boards are designed to provide additional spillway capacity and are made to tear away from the dam at high flows.

The boat barriers and flash boards cannot be replaced until the water level goes down.

Warning signs are posted at nearby boat landings. Xcel Energy reminds the public to keep away from all dams and obey all warning signs, barriers, flashing lights, horns and sirens.
