Pittsburgh, PA (WQOW) -- Eau Claire's hockey programs have a history of producing NHL talent. Saturday, a new chapter is added. Former Eau Claire Memorial standout Jake McCabe was selected in the second round, pick 44 overall, by the Buffalo Sabres.

That's the highest an area player has ever been selected. McCabe was in Pittsburgh for the NHL Draft, and was able to hear his name called surrounded by family and friends. WQOW-News 18 sports anchor Stephen Kelley spoke with McCabe following the pick, and he says it is the highlight of his hockey career.

"Friday was the first round, which I knew was a long shot. So that was a long process. But the second round I knew I was going to get a little antsy and wait for my name to be called as soon as possible. I didn't have to wait too long, but the biggest thing is I had a bunch of friends and family here. They're all here to take in the moment, and it was pretty special to enjoy that with them," says McCabe.

McCabe just finished his freshman year at the University of Wisconsin, where he played in 26 games, scoring 3 goals and adding 9 assists. He says playing in the NHL is his dream, and his future, but he still has work to do for the Badgers.

"I'm with Wisconsin 100-percent. I want to win a national championship and we have a legitimate shot here these next couple of years. We have a really good team and that's my goal right now," adds McCabe. "Obviously this is a great stepping stone and a great accomplishment of mine, but right now my focus is on winning that national championship and that's my only focus."

McCabe will be attending the Sabres prospect camp on July 8th.
