MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Most major roadwork will be on hold across Wisconsin over the July 4 holiday, but the state Department of Transportation is warning motorists to use caution during peak driving hours.

The DOT says most construction work will stop around noon on Tuesday July 3 and not resume until Sunday July 8. Some work may stop even sooner on Friday.

The department says travel is expected to be at its peak between noon and 8 p.m. on Friday, July 3, July 4, and July 8.

Last year, five people were killed in traffic crashes in Wisconsin during the July 4th holiday period.

Significant road construction projects are ongoing across the state, including Interstate 94 in Milwaukee, Kenosha, Eau Claire and St. Croix counties, and U.S. 41 in Winnebago and Brown counties.
