Eau Claire (WQOW) - A devastating beetle is spreading in
southern Wisconsin.
The emerald ash borer was recently
discovered in Janesville, which is in Rock County.
That means the pest can now be found in 12 Wisconsin
counties. Last week, the beetles were found in traps in Kenosha County
as well. The ash borer hasn't made it's way to the Chippewa
Valley yet, but the city of Eau Claire has already
started trimming the number of trees that can be affected.
"We will not be
able to avoid this insect and the devastation of our ash population. But what
we are doing is taking early precautions in preparation for it as I mentioned
with the preemptive ash removal program, so we can remove ash trees on our schedule,
on our terms," said Eau Claire City Forester Todd Chwala.
Signs of emerald ash borer activity
include the top part of the ash tree dying off and "S" shaped hooks under the
trees bark.
If you think you have may have a
tree with emerald ash borer, call the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
at 1-800-462-2803.
