Eau Claire (WQOW) - For the first time in over twenty years, a local apple orchard won't be open for business this fall.
Because of a much smaller crop, Hillview Farm in Eau Claire has decided not to open up for apple picking this fall. Frost earlier this spring damaged about 80 percent of the apple crop there. Hay rides and pumpkin picking are also being canceled.
Jerry Harper, the Co-Owner and Operator of Hillview Farm, says, "We've opened every year and this is the first time we will not. We just wouldn't have enough apples. It's devastating for the orchard to lose all the income from it. We have considerable spray bill and labor bill."
The orchard plans to sell the apples they do have at the Eau Claire farmers market this August.
