Jackson County (Press Release) - On Wednesday June 27, 2012 shortly before 9AM the Alma Center Fire Department was contacted regarding a small leak of Ammonia from the refrigeration system at A-C Meat & Locker on Church St. in the Village of Alma Center. Upon initial response it appeared the leak had been stopped. Fire crews ventilated the building at that time. After ventilating the building it was determined that there was still Ammonia leaking from the system. The Jackson County Level B Hazmat Team along with the Regional Level A Team from Eau Claire were requested and responded to the scene. The Department of Natural Resources along with State inspectors were notified of the situation. Two residences adjacent to the facility were evacuated at that time as a precautionary measure. Due to a change in the wind direction three additional residences were also evacuated as a precaution. The leak was subsequently contained to within the facility and residents were allowed to return home around 4:30pm. Ventilation of the building along with monitoring of the system continued until repair technicians could arrive and make safety remove the Ammonia from the refrigeration equipment. This was completed late last evening and response crews cleared from the scene. There were no reported injuries.
