Eau Claire (WQOW)- The IRS was in Eau Claire Thursday, teaching local non-profits how to fill out the proper paper work to keep their tax-free status.
A workshop was held at UW-Eau Claire Thursday. Area residents were able to ask questions and get pointers on how to remain tax-free. Prior to 2006, non-profits making less than $25,000 a year did not have to file. Now everyone has to. Experts say in the past two years, about 8,000 Wisconsin non-profits have lost their tax-exempt status for failing to file with the IRS.
"A big part of it is letting folks know, especially the smaller organizations that they do now have a filing requirement because if an organization fails to file for three years in a row, they will automatically lose their exempt status; and that's what happened to those 8,000," explains IRS Staff Assistant Richard Crom.
Each participant paid $50 to attend Thursday's workshop.
