State explains license review process in light of fatal crash

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Last year, more than 5,000 driver's licenses were pulled by the Wisconsin DMV because of medical reviews.  An Eau Claire man will now have his license reviewed after a fatal crash on a bike path.

Police say Archie Van Wormer was on Clairemont Avenue on Friday afternoon when he missed a corner and drove onto a bike path.  His SUV hit Kirk Cartwright who was on a bicycle.  Cartwright died.  Police still don't know why Van Wormer left the road and are investigating whether he had any health issues.  He is 90 years old.

A recent check of his driving record shows he had one ticket, for an illegal u-turn, five years ago.  The DMV says it will not take action based on a diagnosis or someone's age.  The issue is whether a medical condition affects their ability to drive safely so when a review has been called for, the DMV may require a road test, knowledge test, medical exam and a vision test.

Of the 5,731 licenses revoked a year ago in Wisconsin, 741 were from drivers who are 85 years old or older.  That's 13%.
