Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The Express end the first half of the Northwoods League season with a thud, falling to Lakeshore 12-4 at Carson Park.
Eau Claire actually took a 4-1 run in the third inning, but things fell apart for there for the Express pitching staff. Starter Devin Moore was chased after 4.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and 7 runs. Eau Claire allowed 19 hits in all. Eau Claire Memorial grad Tyler Sparger pitched a perfect 9th inning for Lakeshore, picking up a strikeout. Offensively, Josh Scheffert finished the night a home run away from the cycle, going 3-4 with an RBI.
"The second half starts tomorrow and hopefully we can start playing better," says manager Dale Varsho. "We need to have a good stellar performance out of Trowbridge tomorrow, and I think he is up for the challenge. We got to make sure we play good solid baseball and we haven't done it in back-to-back days. It's getting frustrating, but hopefully we can just turn on a switch and do something special"
The Express fall to 1-7 on games played on the 4th of July. The team starts the second half of the season with a three-game series at Madison starting Thursday.
