Eau Claire (WQOW)-The heat is causing a headache for road crews.
Eastbound traffic was slowed on highway 29 Thursday after the pavement buckled. It happened near Boyd. Traffic was able to get around the blowout by driving on the shoulder while crews fixed the problem.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is on high alert for these types of incidents because of the heat across the state. In the northwest region there are typically 12 cases reported a year, but due to the temperatures eight sections of roadway have buckled since Sunday.
"As the summer heat gets into the concrete pavements and everything expands at some point in time. The pavement doesn't have any further to expand and its either going to shatter and blow up or it's going to heave up the way the one did on 29 this past week," said Gary Brunner, Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
The DOT recommends that you pay close attention to road conditions and asks that if you notice pavement buckling that you report it by calling 911.
