Gun found in Peshtigo may be from 1956 robbery

PESHTIGO, Wis. (AP) - Investigators are trying to determine whether a gun found in the sediment of the Peshtigo River might be linked to a Peshtigo bank robbery more than 50 years ago.

The gun was found last week in the riverbed, which has been exposed during work on a dam. Local residents discovered what officials believe is a .22-caliber handgun buried in the sediment.

Peshtigo Mayor Al Krizenesky says it's possible the gun was used in a 1956 heist when two robbers made off with more than $1,000 from the Peshtigo National Bank.

Krizenesky hopes a serial number can help authorities officially link the gun to the robbery.

A WLUK-TV report says once all the questions are resolved, city officials hope to display the rusted gun at the city's historical museum.
