Eau Claire (WQOW)- Algae blooms have health experts urging people to use caution on or near the water.
Blue-green algae develop in surface waters with a high concentration of nutrients, particularly phosphorus and can be harmful for humans and their pets. Symptoms include a rash or respiratory problems.
The Department of Natural Resources says the recent stretch of record highs is causing the algae to bloom earlier.
"They typically start growing pretty well in July, August and September but this year being a little earlier than normal. We have hotter, dryer conditions, more sun light, the nutrients are still there and the algae then grow," said Mark Hazuga, Wisconsin DNR.
If you notice water the color of pea soup or see a layer of scum on the water's surface that's a good sign that there's blue green algae present.
