Job openings survey to be released Tuesday

(AP) -- How many job openings are out there?

The government gives its latest report today on the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.

The previous report, for the month of April, showed that the number of available jobs had fallen to 3.4 million, meaning there were 3.7 people on average competing for each job. In a healthy job market, the ratio is usually around 2 to 1.

Hiring has weakened sharply from the start of the year, and so have openings.

On Friday, the government reported that the economy added only 80,000 jobs in June, erasing any doubt that the U.S. is in a summer slump for the third year in a row. It was the third consecutive month of weak job growth.
