Gas prices study: Students hope to size up the markets

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A grant could give an extra push to a study on gas prices.

Some UW-Eau Claire students are studying the market.  The group says it wants information from a national oil price database, but that comes with a cost, so it will apply for a grant.

"It (the database) provides how much gas stations are paying for their gas along with the margins.  It gives us much more detailed information about individual gas stations over various geography.  We're not here to uncover if people are doing things illegally, we're just trying to compare and contrast Eau Claire with cities of similar sizing to see if the pricing structure is similar between these places," says UWEC Professor of Geography Ryan Weichelt.

For years, some have said that prices are higher here because Eau Claire is at the end of a pipeline.  The student group says that's not the case.  They say the line owned by the Magellan Company comes from Minnesota, but extends all the way to Wausau where prices were a nickel cheaper than in Eau Claire on Wednesday.

The group hopes to have the gas prices study finished by the fall.
