MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee police say an officer shot a robbery suspect who refused to drop a gun and pointed it at police.

Authorities said the 22-year-old man was hit in the lower part of his body and was undergoing treatment late Saturday. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said in a news release that officers were flagged down on North 49th Street around 7:45 Saturday and found the man holding a pistol and committing a robbery. The man refused an order to drop the gun. When he aimed it at the police, one officer fired. The 24-year old officer has been placed on administrative duties while the shooting is investigated. The officer is a veteran of five years with the department.

Police did not give details of the robbery.
