Durand (WQOW)- Area students take time out of their summer vacation to work on an art project.
Seeing their original plans, I thought this is quite an undertaking for a group of high school students, but they've come through with flying colors and I think the mural itself is going to be spectacular," says Don Hayden, firefighter with the Durand Fire Department.
Six high school students from Durand created a mural inside the Durand fire hall. It took them about a month to finish. The mural features an old fire truck from 1929 and a painting of a fire chief who served in the 1940's and 50's.
"It was all about bringing art to the community and doing some type of dedication to the people who volunteer here and put forth all this effort," says Kaylee Skinkis, the summer school teacher who was involved with the painting project.
"We don't have a lot of murals down here and I think since we're getting the high schoolers into this, it means a little more than just hiring someone who's doing this for a living," says Rachel Rix, senior at Durand High School.
The official unveiling of the mural will be Thursday at 6pm. The 1929 fire truck will also be on display.
