CDC: Whooping cough rising at alarming rate in US

ATLANTA (WKOW) -- Federal health officials say the U.S. appears headed for its worst year for whooping cough in more than five decades.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say nearly 18,000 cases have been reported so far. That's more than twice the number seen at this point last year. Nine children have died.

In Wisconsin, state health officials say the state is experiencing a widespread outbreak of the disease. So far there are 3,169 confirmed and probable cases. There were only 220 cases up to this point last year.
