WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- More high school students are using condoms, but new government research also shows that the nation still has a long way to go to protect young people from the AIDS virus.
Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracked how teen sexual behavior has changed over 20 years. They found that 60 percent of sexually active high school students report using condoms. That's an improvement from the 46 percent who were using condoms in 1991.
But, federal health officials say progress has stalled. The high school study found condom use reached a high of 63 percent in 2003. And while black students are most likely to heed the safe-sex message, their condom use dropped from a high of 70 percent in 1999 to 65 percent last year.
