Altoona (WQOW) - It turns out residents of an area school district won't face another spending referendum this year after all.
The Altoona School Board has taken the idea off the table for this year. Superintendent Dr. Connie Biedron says the board made that decision during a day long retreat Monday. The board had been considering another referendum after April's election, when voters rejected a $3.6 million, four-year referendum. It lost by just 69 votes.
Biedron says the board decided not to have another referendum because the district is getting an extra $500,000 in state aid this year, and because re-negotiating health insurance premiums will save another $300,000. She says the board is also trying to be sensitive to the area's economic situation.
