Eau Claire (WQOW)- Volunteers spread out across Eau Claire hoping to get a better idea of how many people in the community are affected by homelessness.
A count was done Wednesday night. Volunteers spoke with 36 people who identified themselves as homeless, nine of them were veterans.
That number does not include those staying at local emergency shelters. All of Eau Claire's homeless shelters were at capacity Wednesday night.
The information will be passed along to the Department of Housing and Urban Development along with congress. And could affect how local programs are funded.

Eau Claire (WQOW)- A pair of local communities are hoping to get a better feel for homelessness in the Chippewa Valley.
Volunteers from an Eau Claire organization will be out canvassing the community for people who are experiencing homelessness Wednesday night. The volunteers will be asking questions and the data will be used to help the community understand the size and scope of local homelessness.
"They will get reported to congress and HUD. And hopefully more funding will come in for our community because all of our shelters are full as of today and we're turning people away," said Karen Smith, Western Dairy Land Community Action Agency.
Volunteers will be handing out hygiene kits and information about agencies that can assist homeless people. The count is part of a statewide effort.
Chippewa County will also be conducting a count Wednesday.
