Black River Falls
(WQOW) - After the
escape of two inmates in Black River
Falls, the Jackson County
Sheriff's Department is examining their procedures, and talking about what
they've learned from the case.
The two men, James Newman and James Misleveck
spent a week on the run, before being captured in Florida. While inmates have escaped from the
Black River correctional facility before, the
sheriff's department says it's rare, and that they typically flee the area
quickly.
But in this case, officers say the
two men went on a crime spree in the area, before heading to Florida.
In the hours after the duo was
discovered missing the sheriff's department says communication could have been
improved.
"The notification
process, which seems to be a situation here that we may look at, like the Kwik
Trip, the Walmart, Denny's, the Casino, those 24/7 type places, and giving them
a heads up," says Jackson County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Patrick LaBarbera.
Misleveck
and Newman are accused of stealing a gun and
several cars, along with kidnapping a woman from a casino parking lot and
forcing her to drive them to Sparta.
In Florida,
surveillance cameras captured the duo grabbing a store clerk, and beating him,
while emptying the register.
