Eau Claire (WQOW) - A 90-year-old driver has now been charged with homicide following a crash on a bike path.
Archie Van Wormer, of Eau Claire, was charged with homicide by negligent driving and hit-and-run causing death. He's charged in the death of Kirk Cartwright. The crash happened in June.
Witnesses told police Van Wormer veered off of Clairemont Avenue, drove his small SUV onto a bike path and hit Cartwright's bike from behind. They say Van Wormer continued driving, pushing the bike more than 350 feet. Drivers who saw the crash used their own cars to block-in Van Wormer and keep him from driving further. They told police when they went to grab his keys, Van Wormer asked, "What is going on?"
Police say his driver's license required that he wear prescription glasses behind the wheel and that he admitted he doesn't always wear them. Witnesses say he wasn't at the time of the crash.
His caretaker told investigators that two days earlier Van Wormer had started taking a new medication that came with a warning not to drive until he knew how he would react to it. The caretaker said Van Wormer had taken the medication the morning of the crash. Van Wormer will be in court on Thursday.
