Eau Claire (WQOW) - Take a quick glance around town and
you may think fall is arriving.
Trees have been suffering in the
heat this year. Combine that with a lack of rain and Eau Claire's city forester says some are
already turning color and shedding leaves. Extended seasons of drought can make
trees more susceptible to disease. Young trees are the most at risk, and often
must fight nearby weeds for hydration.
"These plants just
compete with the trees for water, and replacing the turf with a two to three,
even four inch layer of wood chips or mulch to conserve that moisture level can
help out the trees out quite a bit," said Eau Claire City Forester Todd
Chwala.
Eau
Claire began watering trees on public property in early June. Chwala says
that's more than a month ahead of the normal time frame.
