First case of West Nile in western Wisconsin

Pierce County (WQOW) - Health officials report the first case this summer of West Nile Virus in western Wisconsin.

The health department in Pierce County says a dead crow found two weeks ago has tested positive for the virus.  Two other birds in different parts of the state have also tested positive.

There have not been any cases reported in humans. The virus is spread to humans by mosquitos. Health officials say the new discovery means you should be taking extra steps to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

Eighty percent of people who get the virus show no symptoms which can include fever, aching muscles and fatigue. Only one percent of people get seriously ill, most often children and older adults.
