Case moves forward against inmates accused of forging paperwork

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - A convicted killer wrongly released from prison was in court today.

Jimmy Baldwin is accused of having forged documents that altered his sentence.  In 2010, Baldwin walked out of the Stanley prison, more than five decades early.  It took a week before authorities figured it out.  Two other inmates have also been charged in the case: Eddie Evans and Henry Spencer.  They're also accused of having forged paperwork.  Investigators say they went through Spencer's cell once they learned what happened.  They found documents with personal information such as a driver's license number and social security number, both, belonging to Evans.

"I asked him if he knew anything about the judgment of conviction paperwork," said Captain Warren Dohms, "And at this time he would have already known it had been altered, or had suspicions of being altered, through the Milwaukee County Clerk of Court's system and he stated 'in general my family must have chipped and got me a lawyer,' and I asked him if that was the case what would this lawyers name be and he says 'I have no idea it must have been something my family did.'"

During the investigation, one source told authorities that Evans would take his own court documents, make changes and then mail those to someone on the outside who would send the documents back to the prison.  It's still unclear how the changes were made.

On Tuesday, the court determined there was enough evidence to move forward with the cases against Baldwin and Spencer.  Next month, the court could make the same decision in the case against Evans.
