Eau Claire (WQOW)- If you are looking forward to participating in the state's first wolf hunt, you may not want to hold your breath.
The DNR is only issuing 2,000 permits for the hunt and in less than 72 hours, it received more than 5,000 applications. The DNR will use a lottery drawing to determine who gets those permits. Those who don't get one this year will get points towards next years hunt.
"You need so many preference points or you need to apply so many times before you get enough seniority to actually draw a harvest permit," explains DNR Regional Director Dan Baumann.
Hunters will be allowed to kill 201 wolves during the hunt which starts in October. Hunters have until August 31st to apply for a permit.
