Sand expansion: Company applies for larger mine

Posted:

Chippewa County (WQOW) - A frac sand company has plans to expand in Chippewa County.

Superior Silica Sands has applied for a permit to expand its mine in the Town of Auburn by 334 acres.  Its existing mine is 135 acres.  The county says it will begin reviewing the application and expects a public hearing will be held this fall.

A group that focuses on economic planning calls frac sand "one of the greatest land use challenges this area has ever faced."  The West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission says the market for frac sand is expected to remain strong for many years.  The group is developing a website on the topic.  It may include a database and map of all mines, processing facilities and transload sites in the area.  The planning commission expects to roll out the site next month.
