Ettrick man arrested after chase on I-90

West Salem (Press Release from the State Patrol) - While patrolling Interstate 90 from the mile marker 28 crossover, trooper David McCarthy noticed a west bound vehicle with a cracked windshield . Trooper McCarthy pursued the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop but continued at normal highway speeds and exited at State Highway 27. The vehicle turned Northbound into Sparta then accelerated away from trooper McCarthy reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour. Trooper McCarthy continued the pursuit through township and county roads. While traveling through West Salem the vehicles left front tire hit a spike strip placed by a West Salem officer, but the vehicle didn't slow. The vehicle then entered a trailer court off of highway 16 where the subject fled on foot. Trooper McCarthy engaged in a brief foot pursuit of the male driver. A Lacrosse County deputy assisted by using his vehicle to intercept the subjects foot travel. The subject stopped, was apprehended and taken into custody by Trooper McCarthy. After the arrest the male subject was complaining of shortness of breath. Tristate EMS was called and the subject was transported to Franciscan Skemp hospital in Lacrosse where he is being held overnight for observation.
The subject had 2 outstanding warrants through Columbia and Jackson counties. Austin M Haas, 30 of Ettrick faces the following charges: felony eluding an officer, operating while under the influence, a felon in possession of a concealed electric weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and driving while revoked or suspended.
A female passenger in vehicle was not arrested.
