Eau Claire (WQOW)-High school athletes are returning to the field. Football practice got underway Tuesday and besides learning new plays, athletes also learned about concussions.
This past year, the state of Wisconsin, in conjunction with the WIAA, passed legislation to strengthen concussion awareness among student athletes and coaches. Among the changes; players who suffer a concussion must now get a written note from a medical professional clearing them to play.
"We know that we need to be better aware of and making sure those athletes are properly cared for," says Kurt Jacobson, a trainer with the Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. "That they don't return back too soon or put themselves at risk if they're still having symptoms and haven't fully recovered."
The CDC says there were 3.8 million sports related concussions in the
U.S. last year, but only half of athletes who suffered concussions
sought out medical care.
