Eau Claire (WQOW) - Thousands of western Wisconsin drivers were given a heads-up about gas prices going up.
On Thursday afternoon around 2:00 p.m., a text message was sent by Kwik Trip alerting customers that "gas prices are rising today in the Eau Claire area." Between 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. prices went up by a nickel to $3.94.
The text alert is a free feature for Kwik Trip customers who sign up. About 40,000 have since the company launched the program a year ago. Kwik Trip says it tries to give a two-hour notice before prices increase, but also added the following disclaimer: "Due to the volatility of fuel costs, gas prices may sometimes change without notice."
One customer told WQOW News 18 that he's only been alerted two times over the last six or seven price hikes.
Gordy's County Market does not have a fuel alert system, but it does offer Pump Perks. The program gives customers a discount on gas based on what they buy in the store. Gordy's says its customers have saved more than $1 million in the last year using Pump Perks. Mega Foods has a similar program in place called Mega Miles.
