Eau Claire (WQOW) - Nearly a dozen criminal charges are filed Friday against the man blamed for a Clairemont Avenue pile-up that killed his passenger.
Among the charges filed against Travis Hazelton; homicide by drunk driving, homicide by negligent driving and drunk driving 4th offense.
Hazelton's passenger, Jesse Schreiner, died in the crash last month when Hazelton's van crashed into a line of cars at a stoplight.
Hazelton and three others were hurt. According to the criminal complaint, Hazelton and Schreiner had just been kicked out of a tavern about a mile away. The bartender told police that each man had several beers and shots and were disturbing other customers by head-banging and jumping around. She told police they seemed visibly intoxicated when they left after she refused to serve them any more alcohol.
Police say Hazelton told them he doesn't remember anything, but that he also had likely smoked marijuana and that a friend told him he was trashed.
Other drivers told police that Hazelton was driving over 60 mph in a 45-zone and appeared to be intentionally swerving drastically in and out of traffic.
One witness says Hazelton stuck his upper body out of the window and appeared to be hollering.
Hazelton's bond was set Friday at $100,000 cash. He will be back in court on Tuesday.
