Altoona (WQOW) - A local school will pilot a program that takes a unique approach to learning science.
In Altoona, Pederson Elementary students will see science shift from a daily formal setting to a specials course. That means students will have science class once every four days for seventy minutes. This is the same for music, art, and physical education. The Altoona superintendent says, in the past, science has been lost in the shuffle of the day and this will set aside a specific time for the subject.
She also says it allows for more of a focus on writing and reading. "I think our students have done well in science, writing on the other hand, has been identified as an area of need. And also in the new Common Core Standards, writing has really been ramped up. The rigor has really been put into language arts and writing," says Altoona Superintendent of Schools, Connie Biedron.
The school does plan to integrate science into other aspects of the classroom, like including science textbooks in their reading classes.
