GOP candidates for U.S. Senate make their way around Wisconsin

Eau Claire (WQOW) - With less than 24-hours before voters head to the polls for Wisconsin's primary, candidates for U.S. Senate make one last push for votes.

On Monday, former Congressman Mark Neumann made a stop in Eau Claire.  He was at the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport.  Neumann is one of several republicans trying to lock down a spot on the November ballot in the race for U.S. Senate.  Neumann says he likes his chances.

"We've come on real strong here at the end of this race.  We're seeing our supporters come home to the proven conservative in this race," says Mark Neumann, (R) U.S. Senate candidate.  "The fact that I balanced the budget before, 30 years business experience in Wisconsin, creating Wisconsin jobs, much like Ron Johnson.  They are coming home.  Voters are coming home to the proven conservative in this race."

Eric Hovde was also on the campaign trail.  He met with voters at an event in Fitchburg.  During the stop, Hovde talked about Congressman Paul Ryan who, over the weekend, was named as Mitt Romney's running mate.

"I'm just thrilled because Paul has been talking about the same issues the last 5-6 years that propelled me to get into this race," says Eric Hovde, (R) U.S. Senate candidate.  "My whole reason for getting off the sidelines and into the race was the massive amount of debt we're taking on."

Former Governor Tommy Thompson was in Wausau to meet with voters.  The most recent Marquette Law Poll shows Thompson leading the field of candidates by eight points, heading into the final week.

"I've been able to bring Reagan Democrats and Independents across, none of the other candidates have won," says Tommy Thompson, (R) U.S. Senate candidate.  "If you want a Republican senator and one that's going to control the Senate for Republicans and change this country for the better you should vote for me."

State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald is also eyeing the senate seat being vacated by herb kohl.  Fitzgerald is using his final day to talk to voters about his record at the state level.

"That's been my message from this campaign, that what we did in Wisconsin by making tough choices that weren't popular, but led to a balanced budget and show a surplus for the state without raising taxes," says Jeff Fitzgerald, (R) U.S. Senate candidate.  "People understand that's what we have to do in Washington, D.C."

The winner will go on to face Democrat Tammy Baldwin in the November election.
