Wis. DNR receives more than 10,000 wolf hunt apps

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Department of Natural Resources says more than 10,000 people have applied for a wolf hunt permit so far.

The agency says it had received 10,025 permit applications as of Tuesday morning. The vast majority -- 9,820 -- are from Wisconsin residents.

The DNR plans to issue 2,010 permits through a lottery. The application period ends Aug. 31. The hunt is scheduled to begin Oct. 15 and run through the end of February. A group of humane societies has filed a lawsuit in Madison seeking to block the hunt, arguing the DNR failed to prevent hunting dogs from dying in confrontations with wolves. An injunction hearing has been set for Aug. 29.
