Eau Claire (WQOW) - Eau Claire has approved the contract for a new city manager.
Russell Van Gompel will make $135,000 a year. He's been the village manager in Brown Deer for the past 14 years. The City of Eau Claire approved a three-year deal with him. Among the contract perks: Up to $7,500 for moving expenses, a $500 vehicle allowance every month and three weeks vacation.
The city council unanimously approved the contract on Tuesday night. Van Gompel's first day will be November 12th. Eau Claire has been searching for a new city manager since Mike Huggins retired last December. The city has a budget of about $130 million. The city manager oversees that and more than 500 employees. "We had a very pleasant time, I think, of negotiating the terms of this contract and that Mr. Van Gompel, even though he had some requests, he conceded to our counter offer and accepted our terms... so it really turned out very well. I think people can be pleased, that the city council did take this time, to get it done right," said Dave Duax, EC City Council member.
