Chippewa County (WQOW) - A proposal to study the air in Chippewa County will soon be on the table.
On Thursday, the Health & Human Services Board will review the proposal. The focus is about ambient crystalline silica that comes from frac sand mining. Sand mining is a source of silicosis, which is a lung disease. What isn't known is what happens if you're exposed to dust outside of a mine over long periods of time.
The purpose of the study is to understand the level of exposure to the public and whether public health is being affected.
There will be public hearings on the design of the project and its findings. There are still many questions about the potential study, from the time frame to cost. That's something the county will most likely look at. The Chippewa County Health Department says county board approval will be sought before anything is implemented.
