Eau Claire (WQOW) - A local group rallies to collect school supplies for kids in need.
Wednesday night, dozens of students from Roosevelt elementary and their family members took part in the first ever Project Backpack event held by The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Kids were able to pick out free school supplies and even get their hair cut.
"Our two boys got their hair cut, it was fantastic. We were actually going to get their hair cut in a couple days anyways so it was perfect," says Branden Nall, a father of two students who go to Roosevelt elementary.
"We reached out to not only the church community here at Good Shepherd but also to the whole community. We sold raffle tickets and we sent letters to vendors and we just got a wonderful response. I think we live in a very generous community," says Cindy Hoenisch, a member of The Good Shepherd Outreach group.
Organizers say over 100 backpacks filled with supplies were given out at the event.
