Salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW) - State officials are warning consumers about an outbreak of salmonella in cantaloupe.

The Wisconsin Department of Trade and Consumer Protections says at least two people have been sickened as part of an ongoing multistate outbreak of salmonella.

The FDA says two people have been killed, and 141 sickened across 20 states. The cantaloupe comes from southwestern Indiana. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the USDA are investigating the outbreak, and tracing the source of the affected melons. Until the source of the bacteria is determined, and it's known what stores the melons were sent to, consumers are being warned not to eat any melons from southwestern Indiana. Cantaloupe generally comes with stickers identifying their state of origin. If there's no sticker, you can call the store and ask where the fruit came from.
