Scammers target credit union members in our area

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Area residents are targeted in a scam aimed at their bank accounts.

People started getting automated calls over the weekend on their cell phones telling them their debit card at RCU had been blocked or de-activated. Residents were told to punch in their debit card number to solve the problem.

RCU says it was a scam. It says all of the people receiving the calls had cell phone numbers that started with 577.

Those who didn't even have accounts at RCU hung up but some of the credit union's 170,000 members did enter their debit card numbers. RCU doesn't know how many did but says at this point they have not had to reverse any charges.

The credit union says it first became aware of the scam Sunday afternoon and immediately put out warnings on it's website, Facebook, and other venues. An RCU spokeswoman says they would never contact a customer and ask for any of their account information.
