Area school district works to meet fire codes

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW)- With the school year about to start teachers are being told to limit what they hang on the wall.

The Eau Claire School District is working with the local fire department to enforce fire codes in school buildings.  One of the codes being looked at only allows 20% of wall surfaces in classrooms or hallways to be covered with combustible materials.  That can include things like artwork, teaching materials and cabinets.

"It's a tough call, because you're right, the way kids learn today is more color, more visual aids, but we have to minimize it, again looking at the safety of everybody overall, the money loss and or a life loss is to great to say we should of or could of," said Mike Laska, Eau Claire lead fire inspector.

The fire department says having those types of materials in a classroom can cause a fire to spread more quickly.  The fire department inspects schools twice a year.
