Eau Claire (WQOW)- Your chances of winning a wolf hunt permit in a state-wide lottery continue to get smaller and smaller.
The DNR says it has received almost 13,000 applications from hunters interested in taking part in the state's first ever wolf hunt.
201 wolves can be killed in the hunt. But last week, the DNR allocated 85 of those to the Chippewa Indian Tribe. Previously, the agency had said it would be issuing more than 2,000 permits, but after making a deal with the tribe, it is issuing less than 1,200. The DNR guesses your chance of getting a permit through the lottery is about 9 percent and the likelihood of actually killing a wolf is less than 1 percent.
"This works a lot like the bear hunt where you can accumulate points every year," explains DNR Spokesperson Ed Culhane. "If we have a similar set of numbers each year, it could somewhere up to 10 years to get a license."
The Great Lakes Indian, Fish and Wildlife Commission says tribe members do not intend to kill any wolves. The wolf hunt begins in October. The DNR is still accepting applications through the end of the month.
