Chippewa County (WQOW) - The work at a local sand mine has stopped until next year.
The Preferred Sands LaGesse mine wrapped up production for the year very early. That mine is in the Town of Cooks Valley. The president of Preferred Sands said they expected to go through September, but production exceeded expectations. He said they "built a Ferrari for what a Cadillac could do." They already have enough sand to get through winter so they shut down early.
The mine has about 35 employees. Some will be shifted to other facilities owned by Preferred Sands for the time being. The president says mining at this site will pick up again next spring.
