Dunn County (WQOW) - A large turnout for a public hearing over another controversial frac sand facility.
Vista Sand wants to build a sand transfer facility on a 168-acre site. It's located just off highway 12 between Menomonie and Knapp. Sand would be trucked in and piled up, then loaded onto railroad cars to be shipped out. On Tuesday, the Dunn County Planning, Resources and Development Committee took public comment on whether to re-zone the site from agricultural to industrial.
The wide majority of those who spoke Tuesday were against the project. They expressed concerns about blowing sand, silica dust, and the hundreds of trucks that would come through six days a week. Vista says thirteen jobs would be created, and the facility would be open for 25 years.
The commission is expected to vote on the re-zoning request on September 11th. It would then go to the Dunn County board.
