Eau Claire (WQOW)- Crews were called to battle a fire on Eau Claire's north side Tuesday night.
Flames broke out at a home on Davey Street around 6 o'clock. Firefighters believe the fire began in the kitchen area then quickly spread. It's not clear what sparked the flames. The homeowner and a dog were able to get out of home un-harmed. There is no cost estimate yet, but firefighters say the damage inside the home is extensive.
"This was a real heavy fire. The fire had vented out of that back window like I said earlier, so it was basically a free burning fire," said Scott Burkart ECFD deputy chief. "It had everything it needed to keep burning plenty of fuel, plenty of oxygen. So the fire extended through the house fairly quickly. By the time the first crews arrived, the fire had already extended up into the attic."
The Red Cross is helping the homeowner find clothing, food and a temporary place to stay.
